With 4 to 30 V input, the Microchip MCP16301 supplies a maximum of 600 mA at 2 to 15 V, with an efficiency of up to 95%. A high-side switch is integrated in the small 6-pin SOT-23 housing, which reduces the number of external components to a minimum. This makes it possible to generate the required supply voltage for microcontrollers or other low-voltage components from a voltage source of 12 V to 24 V. In high-speed peak current mode, fast regulation of spontaneous changes in input voltage and load in power applications is achieved, the MCP16301 provides excellent input voltage and load regulation. Its own control loop and edge compensation helps to simplify the stabilization of the converter control system and increase reliability. Compared to low-dropout regulators, the power consumption of the MCP16301 is lower and therefore the heat generation is also lower. Cooling measures can therefore be reduced, while the efficiency of the converter has been improved despite the footprint remaining the same. It reaches the size of a typical D²PAK heat sink for an LDO regulator.
The reduced power consumption also results in an extended battery life. The MCP16301 is not only suitable for set-top boxes, LED lighting, HVAC systems and power meters, it can also be used in a wide range of industrial, telecommunications, consumer electronics and automotive applications. Development with the MCP16301 is supported by an eight-page application note, a free Excel calculation spreadsheet and two demonstration boards: the MCP16301 300 mA D2PAK footprint demonstration board and the MCP16301 600 mA demonstration board.
