A video scaler is a system that converts video signals of one image resolution to another. Typically, scalers are used to convert a signal from a lower resolution (such as 480p standard definition) to a higher resolution (such as 1080i high definition), a process known as "upscaling" (in contrast, converting high resolutions to low: "downscaling"). Scalers are used in a variety of different applications - consumer and commercial.
