Low-inductance DC capacitors

PK16 (E50)

They are at the heart of the DC links of the world's leading converter manufacturers: the low-loss DC capacitors with high energy density and low self-inductance.

The PK16™ capacitor can be used universally to build low-inductance DC links and for DC filters and, with its high energy density, can replace both batteries of series-connected electrolytic capacitors and large rectangular film capacitors.

The capacitance in a DC link must be large enough to smooth out any superimposed AC voltages that occur and to cope with corresponding ripple currents. The traditional series/parallel connection of electrolytic capacitors offers high capacitance at an apparently low cost, but the low cost per microfarad is offset by a very low current carrying capacity, high surge current and voltage sensitivity and a considerable risk of failure in the field, which is reflected in high maintenance costs.

Top performance has a name

Thanks to five times the current capability of conventional electrolytic capacitors, it is no longer necessary to achieve exactly the same capacitance in film technology in order to handle a given current. Instead, the user receives a high-quality technical solution with the same or reduced space requirement and the following advantages:

  • drastically longer service life
  • higher voltage and current resistance
  • Remarkable reduction of failures
  • minimization of power loss
  • Significant reduction in self-inductance and series resistance
  • more precise production tolerances
  • Elimination of balancing resistances

With its compact cylindrical design, the capacitor is optimally adapted to the electrical and mechanical requirements of fast-cycle IGBT power converters. The robust connection elements and a stable base mounting enable particularly easy installation, combining the lowest inductance with high current carrying capacity. The exceptionally large clearances and creepage distances cover a wide voltage range without having to change the design. This means that a standard power converter concept can be adapted much more flexibly to different applications without the need for new designs and therefore new system tests.

Electronicon offers film capacitors "Made in Germany". From the coating of the film to the winding and manufacturing of the capacitors, the entire process takes place at the plant in Gera. Film capacitors offer various advantages in power electronics and are environmentally friendly in production.

Since the early forties, when SIEMENS&HALSKE AG moved parts of their production from Berlin to East Thuringia in the heart of Germany, capacitors have been manufactured by ELECTRONICON Kondensatoren GmbH (formerly RFT Kondensatorenwerk) in Gera. Highest quality and reliability of all products have been the basis of their company philosophy from the very beginning. Especially since its spin-off from the former East German electrical company RFT/VEB ELEKTRONIK Gera in autumn 1992, ELECTRONICON has succeeded in becoming one of the leading capacitor manufacturers in Europe with worldwide supply relations by continuously expanding and improving its product range. More than 500 qualified engineers and skilled workers produce capacitors and accessories for lighting and drive technology, power electrics and electronics, and power factor correction. Extensive investments in modern and environmentally friendly technologies guarantee the highest standards in manufacturing and quality assurance. The products of ELECTRONICON Kondensatoren GmbH are approved according to the latest standards by international testing institutions. ELECTRONICON's quality assurance system is monitored by TÜV according to ISO 9001. Since 1942 ELECTRONICON has been able to metallize its dielectric materials itself using the latest technologies. This ensures uninterrupted quality assurance from the raw foil to the finished capacitor.

Advantages of ELECTRONICON film capacitors
