Supercapacitors, also known as ultracapacitors, are excellent for supplying current peaks due to their low internal resistance. This can significantly increase the service life of a battery. In some applications, the battery can even be replaced.

Eaton's Powerstor Super Caps for back-up and power pulse applications are characterized by their extremely high capacitance in farads and use advanced carbon foam technology. They are approximately 2000 times smaller than equivalent electrolytic capacitors and offer extremely low internal resistance (ESR), resulting in high pulse power. Compared to lithium-ion batteries, they enable a surge current that is up to ten times greater. In addition, they offer extremely high discharge cycles, which are almost infinite compared to batteries, and a very low leakage current so that the component can hold its charge for weeks. By taking on the surge current load and operating in parallel, the service life of the battery can be extended considerably.
